COMMUNITY - VOLUNTEERING
- Volunteer Bureau
- Martlets Hospice
Martlet House in Bannings Vale is a sheltered housing scheme
for active
retired people. BT has donated a computer system for the
use of residents
of the scheme and also retired people living in the area.
We now need volunteers
to help everyone learn to use the computer and 'surf the
net' If you are
able and willing to help please contact the manager, Lesley,
on 01273 309179
or email lesley-jay_cornell@tiscali.co.uk
- Brighton and Hove Samaritans
Dubarry House, Nr Hove Station
Telephone: 01273 772277
The Samaritans provide confidential emotional support to
any person who is suicidal or despairing. We are available
on the telephone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
NEW VOLUNTEERS ALWAYS NEEDED
We currently have 120 volunteers providing a round-the-clock
telephone helpline for distressed and suicidal callers.
A 4-stage process leads to being invited to
become a volunteer at Brighton & Hove Branch:
Application form
First interview
Selection Day
Preparation Class
No special skills needed just an open mind and an ability
to listen. We do not counsel or give advice and we are all
very much 'ordinary' people.
APPLICATION FORMS and information can be
obtained by telephoning 01273 772277.
FIRST INTERVIEWS for potential new volunteers, lasting for
about an hour, are conducted at the Samaritan Centre in
Hove.
SELECTION DAYS, following the first interview, are also
held at the Samaritan Centre, approximately once a month.
PREPARATION CLASSES for new volunteers are run twice a year
in the spring and autumn - two weekends a fortnight apart.
- The Peacehaven and Telscombe Volunteer Bureau
The Peacehaven and Telscombe Volunteer Bureau covers an
area from East Saltdean to Newhaven.
It provides a wide range of help, from befriending, help
from hospital, a grass cutting scheme and the charity shop
in Longridge Avenue, Saltdean.
Volunteers help with shopping, transport and a whole range
of other services.
If you wish to join the organisation which is a registered
charity please come along to meetings on the third Friday
of every month at the clinic.
It is dependent on outside sources and will soon be open
to non-volunteering members at a cost of £5 for individuals
and £10 for organisations
If you could help at all please telephone Linda Beckman
on 586685
18 Longridge Avenue, Avenue, Saltdean BN2 8LH
(Four other shops around Brighton)
Each shop raises valuable funds for the work of the Hospice
in caring for local patients and their families in the Brighton
area as far as Ringmer. The Martlets offer symptom control,
respite and terminal care to adult patients for whom curative
treatment is no longer possible. The ability of our shops
to support the Hospice depends on the generosity of the
public in donating stock, the loyalty of our customers and
the hard work of our many volunteers, who work both at the
counter and behind the scenes at our shops.
VOLUNTEERS ALWAYS NEEDED
If you have a few hours to spare each month and are reasonably
fit, then why not consider helping at our shop.
No retail experience is necessary, as training will be
given. We also need drivers and helpers for our home collection
and clearance service and to deliver stock to our shop.

Help create a safer environment to live in here in Saltdean.
By working closely with the police we can make a difference.
We need more Neighbourhood Watch schemes in Saltdean and
Rottingdean.
Such schemes aim to:
- Reduce oppertuinity for crime to occur
- Make life more difficult for oppertuinist criminals
- Enhance communication with the police
- Build up community contact and spirit
Neighbourhood Watch is free, you are not expected to patrol
the street, and you may qualify for cheaper home insurance
if you are part of a registed scheme.
Are you an active retired person or someone who can
help?
To register your interest please contact Geoff Bentham Tel.665933
or Julia Wyorn Tel.665711 who will advise you how to set
up a scheme.
