  • "Sharing is caring" says the Mayor of Telscombe Town, Cllr Marina Pepper.

The Mayor will visit the A259 in East Saltdean to encourage motorists to share their journeys. Wednesday 9th June 2004. 7.30am - 8.00am
Following countless complaints from constituents regarding traffic congestion on the South Coast Road. the new Mayor has decided to take matters in hand. "What struck me when I went to look," she says, " is that every car jammed bumper to bumper had just one person in it.

"Technically speaking," she says, "If each car were filled with passengers, you'd have only a quarter of the cars on the road. And since they all seem to be going in the same direction each morning, ie in to Brighton, it makes sense for more people to share." So Marina is going to meet the drivers on Wednesday to give them details of car share schemes and tell them about NATIONAL LIFT SHARE DAY ON 14TH June. You simply log on to a website, give your details and
hopefully fellow travellers who match your journeys are found. It is a secure service and every effort is made to ensure the safety of individuals. There is a code of practise involving presentation of ID, among other things. www.liftshare.com or www.travelchoice.org or call 08700 111199

Following her walkabout and leaflet distribution, The mayor will jog up the hill and join the walking bus to Saltdean Primary. "We're short of volunteers this week, owing to holiday leave." So it's photo ops all round. . . .

Call Marina on 01273 300 116 for more details. Or call Marcus 08700 780 225 to find out more about lift sharing

  • East Saltdean resident becomes Mayor of Telscombe

The first female Mayor of Telscombe Town Council - which includes East Saltdean -for 14 years is Marina Pepper.

She looks forward to putting this power to good use, serving her community and promoting Liberal Democracy in the coming year. So far she has chosen just one charity THE HOUSE PROJECT in Peacehaven. She would also like to support an environmental charity. Ideas are welcome. Other than that, she plans to get involved with local residents associations to help them adjust to the demands of 21st century residents. Plus she intends to green the civic centre. She announced she wanted to purchase our electricity from renewable sources.

She will also be opening Telscombe Fair on 18th July.

  • Ladies Day Success

Well done to all the Ladies who organised the Day at Telscombe Civic Centre in aid of Breast Cancer research. A really interesting, pampering day was had by all (and I bought loads of fab jewellery for 50p each).

Well done Diane, the raffle which looked fab and Julie Gilberts painting of the naked lady on Brighton seafront. When I get my scanner working I'll put the news articles on the newscuttings page!

  • New Doctors Hours - Longridge Avenue

The Surgery are no longer accepting emergency calls on Saturday Mornings - instead phone

Brightdocc 01273 687728 outside surgery hours

  • Just what is going on with the Grand Ocean Hotel?

Grand Ocean Hotel. Berkeley say they are not buying. This is very likely to be accurate as they would want to get the various planning proposals cleared first. Let us hope that it does happen and that the proposals are in good taste which is usual with this company. Otherwise it will continue to be an eyesore as at present.

Warning to residents using Longridge Avenue in vicinity of the Co-op, do not be surprised if after 10.00p.m. motor scooters pass you on the pavement. No doubt there will be an accident shortly. They are unable to use the opposite pavement because this is blocked by Taxi cabs.

Many thanks - Anyone else got an update? Although the hotel chain seem to be denying any sale a regular Saltdean.info browser has passed onto me

'It looks like the rumours are true. The staff have been told that parts of the hotel will be closing in October, swimming pool etc. and the hotel will finally close on 1st. January. No news of whether the new owners will run it as a hotel or knock it down and redevelop, but isn't the facade protected Grade 2?' Anyone else got any further information - we'd all love to know?

  • Drama in Rottingdean

It's a pleasure to be able to review a new group for those adults looking to open up their horizons. The Adult Drama course at the Whiteways Centre in Rottingdean is for anyone who'd like to develop their sense of self . . . or stage presence.

Having attended the first series of sessions I can honestly say that Doreen and Zoe, who run the course, will really make you feel welcome and encourage you to open up and find bits of yourself you didn't know you had! OK, so sometimes that's a bit challenging . . . but the rewards are well worth the effort . . . and it's fun!

The group runs on Thursday nights from 7.30 to pm with the next series of 6 sessions starting on April 22nd at only £4 per week. For further details and to express your interest call 01273 581742.

  • Lap Dancing April Fool in Rottingdean

Anyone else see the April Fool in Rottingdean as reported in the Argus last week. Apparently, last year signs went up reporting that Rottingdean was twinned with Dodge City! This year the hoaxer went one better and on official looking paper from Brighton and Hove Council put planning application signs up round the village for an adult lap dancing club!! The result was residents up in arms, complaining to the council who promptly told them that there was no such application. Well done the hoaxer! If I had my pesky scanner working I'd scan it in (will get a new computer soon and catch up on the back dated articles.

Lots of complaints about the new wheelie bins in West Saltdean.

Is it a restriction on the amount of rubbish you chuck out - and is this a good thing?

If you have children in nappies we provide information on the use of real nappies, which will save you money and the environment. About the bin Your bin is a durable 140 litre capacity, plastic wheeled container. The bin is the property of the council but it is your responsibility to look after it.

Lots of rumours flying around Saltdean about the imminent sale of the Grand Ocean Hotel to Berkeley Homes to be converted into luxury flats.
