Digital Switch Over - message from NW

TV is going digital all over the UK and soon the traditional TV signal will be switched off in your area. If you don’t have digital TV by the time of the switch over, your TV screen will go blank, but you don’t need to worry; the help scheme is here to help.

The switchover help scheme is run by the BBC, to help older and disabled people with everything they need.

Am I eligible?
The scheme can help those who:

  • Is aged 75 or over, or
  • Has lived in a care home for 6 months or more, or
  • Gets (or could get) certain disability benefits, or
  • Is registered blind or partially sighted.

The help scheme has written to all eligible people. To take up the option, everyone who has received the mailing needs to reply.

What’s important to know:
The switchover will be taking place in the Brighton area in March and there will be an increasing number of installers working through your area in the run up to these dates.

  • The change over team will NEVER cold call. An appointment will be made weeks in advance to attend to carry out the work.
  • Each house to change over should take about 45 minutes.
  • The installer will be CRB checked.
  • He/she will wear a yellow reflective tabard and have an ID card with their picture on it.
  • Unless a broken box is installed, they will only need to visit the premises once.

Will I have to pay?
The standard option includes:

  • Easy to use equipment
  • An approved installer to supply and install the equipment for you.
  • A 12 month aftercare service including a free helpline and help with re-tuning.

This service is available for £40 all inclusive or free for eligible people on certain income related benefits; pension credit, income support, income-related employment and support allowance or income based job seeker’s allowance.

£450k grant for east Brighton charity

© The Argus Wednesday 15th February 2012

Families at risk of breaking up will get help after a charity received a funding boost of more than £450,000.

East Brighton Family Support Project claims 40% of participating parents admitted they feared losing custody of their children prior to receiving support.

Following a bid to the Big Lottery Fund, the organisation has been given a grant of £466,453 for its Reaching Communities programme.

This will mean the project, which supports families most at risk of breaking down and involvement from social services, will be expanded.

The charity will base the project at Saltdean Primary School in Chiltington Way, and will support about 500 parents and carers and 900 children in 16 schools in the east Brighton area.

Since the project began in January 2009, more than 600 children and families have become more active in their communities, and 54 parents have returned to work, taken up volunteering or education.

One user, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I was at the point of despair. My support worker tried to reassure me that I was not alone. She gave me steers as to how to help my child.”

It was one of three projects in the region to receive money from the lottery’s Reaching Communities programme.

Fishbourne reverend to be made canon

A female vicar is to be made a canon at a special service to be held at Chichester Cathedral next year.

Reverend Moira Wickens, who has been in charge of the Fishbourne and Apuldram parish for just under a year, received a letter inviting her to take up the stall of Bracklesham at a ceremony to be held on February 11.

She has been given the post to recognise the work she has done with her vocational role within the diocese.

Rev Wickens said: “I have to say I’m not sure I deserve it, there are lots of people who do lots of work. I thought it was a joke when I got the letter, it was such a surprise.”

Since being ordained in 1994, Rev Wickens has spent all of her ministry in the Chichester Diocese, Posts have included Saltdean and a school on the Whitehawk estate in Brighton which she described as a real learning curve and very good experience. She then went to Kingston Buci in Shoreham before taking up the reins from Rev Clive Ashley in Fishbourne.

“It is very different, there is a real sense of community in Fishbourne,” said Rev Wickens.

“It has its own identity and I love the countryside; although we weren’t far from the countryside it wasn’t quite the same.

“I love it here, I love the people in the church, they are so talented and gifted and good and it is a real joy being here.”

Rev Wickens said Apuldram was very different, and that St Mary the Virgin Church was one of the ‘hidden gems’ of the diocese.

Her work was to build on the job done by her predecessor, and she has led the popular Beer and Carols event at The Bulls Head pub in Fishbourne.

Her commitments include holding services at the Apuldram Centre and maintaining and extending links with Fishbourne CoE Primary School which she said was very important.

“My main emphasis is to encourage people to use their gifts and talents. We have set up a space for children in the church, rather than just slotting them in, to make Fishbourne Church a good place where families can come.”

She is also incorporating experience gained during her vocational role to help people in the parish.

“I am using that to encourage people to find their vocation whatever that might be whether work or different roles in the church,” she said.

Rev Wickens – who is not the only woman to be made a canon in the diocese – will be among six members of the clergy to be made canons.

These include Jeremy James taking up the stall for Eartham, while the Sidlesham stall will be taken up by Martin Onions.
